BEST TIME TO VISIT
The Best Time to Visit Katavi National Park is during the dry season, which typically occurs from June to October. During this period, the park’s water sources diminish, forcing wildlife to concentrate around remaining waterholes and rivers, making for exceptional game viewing opportunities. The dry season also coincides with Katavi’s peak tourist season, offering optimal weather conditions for safari activities and wildlife photography. However, for birdwatchers, the wet season from November to May brings migratory bird species to the park, adding an additional dimension to the safari experience.
WILDLIFE
- Hippos and Crocodiles: Katavi is renowned for its large populations of hippos and crocodiles, particularly during the dry season when they congregate in dwindling water sources. Visitors can observe these aquatic giants basking in the sun along the banks of the Katuma River and Katavi’s numerous seasonal lakes.
- Elephants: Katavi is home to a significant population of African elephants, which roam the park in search of water and food. These majestic creatures can often be seen congregating around waterholes or traversing the savannah in family groups.
- Buffaloes: Large herds of Cape buffaloes are a common sight in Katavi National Park, with numbers reaching into the thousands during the dry season. Witnessing these massive bovines moving en masse across the plains is a sight to behold.
- Lions: Katavi supports healthy populations of lions, offering visitors the chance to witness these apex predators in their natural habitat. Lions can often be seen lounging in the shade of acacia trees or embarking on hunting expeditions in the golden light of dawn and dusk.
- Leopards: While more elusive than lions, leopards inhabit the woodlands and riverine areas of Katavi National Park. Patient visitors may be rewarded with sightings of these elusive big cats as they move stealthily through the undergrowth in search of prey.
